Post tutorial final project thinking

As always, an energetic and diverse range of discussion topics going everywhere from painting media through comparison of transitions in art and music, to political statements about the impact of the lack of a mobile signal in a village.

We established that, whatever I do, I’m telling a story and that, for now, the final scene in this particular chapter (3.2) is yet to be written. We talked elsewhere about transitions in videos, the way they can glitch or blend or fade from one sequence into the next, and this seemed an appropriate metaphor for Project 10 which is the last of 3.2 and the precursor to 3.3. It needs to pull together my experience of the course in its entirety which, I would argue, is embodied in 3.2, and, like the trailer for a new drama series, provide a taster of what might be to come.

So what is it, then, that thing that is to come? While I’ve learned throughout this course and felt more profoundly in the Level 3 units, that I rarely have a solid sense of what the next step may be, I’ve also grown in confidence that, if I leave it alone to bubble under, it will emerge. I also know, due to understanding something of the workings of unconscious processes, that whatever that is, will be grown from and built with everything that’s gone before. There are some key elements:

  1. A physical painting
  2. Digital layers via painting apps such as Rebelle
  3. Animation
  4. Green screen and hence filmic layers
  5. Augmented Reality (AR)
  6. Displays using public buildings

Towards this aim, I have accumulated over the duration of this course, a number of skills I might have expected to acquire such as painting practice, and many others I could not have conceived of, never mind expected to use in a painting degree.

  1. Much improved painting and confidence in working with physical media
  2. A better foundation for the use of digital technologies and filmmaking
  3. Integration of text with art, drawing in this instance on my background in writing fiction
  4. A much-enhanced sense of what it takes for me personally to be creative
  5. And the value of empathic but challenging discussion such as I encounter in tutorials.

A propo this last, the notion of a transition similar to those I make verbally in the sections of a short story, or between sequences in a video, feels like a good choice for the final project of this unit. A piece of work that reflects progression throughout the previous projects, shows how these have layered upon each other, and offers a glimpse into the 3.3 still veiled by my lack of access to it and the fact that it has most likely been re-written along with most of the others so no one else knows either.

My brief to myself then is to shift everything up a gear. That’s it. Take what I’ve done, what I’ve learned from what I’ve done, and apply boosters to it. Morning Glory time.
